Through the scenario I make mentions of the plagues of Egypt because since the characters are about to find the book of the Pharo's magicians, it perfectly makes sense (they are the ones who suffered from the plagues of egypt and tried to replicate them)
Jannes and Jambres are in the bible the Pharo's magicians and before dying Jannes writes a book of spells and gives it to Jambres, who then uses it to perfome Necromancy to talk to Jannes' spirit. At that time this book was probably written in Heratic.
The count of Toulouse did lose his land due to Catharism and Barral des Baux did reconquer it. He was excommunicated many times and did say "The excommunicated are my friends, and those who seek absolution are my enemies."
The entier Malucène church was indeed excommunicated also. http://jean.gallian.free.fr/Barral-Web/P13.html
The conflict between Guelphs (papal supporters) and Ghibellines (imperial supporters) tore apart medieval europe for centuries and this particular reconquest of Provence was just one episode of it.
*The Cathar heresy and the Albigensian Crusade
*The legend of Iram of the Pillars
*The medieval pursuit of the Philosopher's Stone through alchemy
*The Danse Macabre motif
